Itinerary – 8 Days

Day 1 – Podgorica Arrival

Our adventure officially begins at Podgorica Airport where you meet the tour leader – your host during the next 8 days who will guide you through the authenticity of Montenegro making this journey meaningful for you. After a transfer to the hotel in Podgorica, a “welcoming” lunch takes place in the restaurant offering traditional food. Late afternoon hours are reserved for a boat tour in Skadar Lake National Park to enjoy its unique beauty and biodiversity. As this area is a cradle of the wine industry in Montenegro, we don’t miss visiting a local winery to enjoy tasting wines and local food. Transfer to the hotel in Podgorica follows the dinner.

Day 2 – Hike through the cosmic beauty of Sinjavina

In the morning we will be transferred to the pass of Semolj (1,565m) as it is the starting point of our hike through Sinjavina, the mountain whose big part is hilly terrain resembling the surface of the Moon. Exploring this remote area, we discover the local shepherds’ tradition of spending summers in katun – seasonal settlements situated in the mountains. Hiking uphill to gain Vranova Glava (2,215m) and Gradišta (2,174m), the peaks connected by the ridge, we enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains. The downhill part of our trail takes us to a stone field and hilly mountain area. From the pass of Vratlo (1,720m) we enjoy amazing views of the massive peaks of Sinjavina and the Lipovo Valley (1,350m) between them. This valley is our today’s hike goal and from it we will be transferred to have dinner and stay overnight at Mirović Apartments, in Kolašin.

Day 3 – Ascent through the ancient forests of Biogradska Gora National Park to experience traditional local lifestyle

This day we start with a transfer to Biogradsko Lake in Biogradska Gora National Park, the oldest protected area in Montenegro. Its heart is Bjelasica, the mountain of unique landscapes in Montenegro. After a walk along the lake, we head for the shepherds’ settlement – katun of Goleš (1,600m) hiking uphill through the virgin forest. From the lake situated at 1,096m, we gain 1,690m walking just 2km, but of biodiversity abundance and pure silence that only untouched nature ensures. The local household of Bulatovići in Goleš Katun is a great place to have lunch, experience living traditions and taste local specialities. We continue our tour and enjoy views of amazing surroundings hiking uphill to two peaks – Međedak (1,893m) and Ogorela Glava (1,988m), connected by the ridge. Stay overnight on the slopes of Bjelasica at Vranjak Eko Katun (1,750m) offers you wide views of the area and night sky experiencing the old tradition of life with the mountain.

Day 4 – Along the Peaks and Lakes of Bjelasica

In the morning we leave our hosts and head for a hike along the slopes of Bjelasica to reach the peaks of Troglava (2,072m), Zekova Glava (2,117m) and Crna Glava (2,139m). All of them are connected by grassy pastures and offer amazing views of the Biogradska Gora National Park’s gems like a destiny of the virgin forest, the area where the Biogradska River starts to run, glacial Pešića Lake, etc. We discover the beauty of Ursulovačko Lake, situated below Crna Glava, in both ways – from the distance and its shores. From the lake, we continue walking downhill and a bit uphill through the forest to see some more katun and visit Šiško Lake. After this natural attraction – the last for this day we go downhill along a macadam road to the valley (1,470m) where our hike is completed.

Day 5 – Vasojevićki Kom Hike in Komovi Nature Park

We start this day with a transfer to the foot of Komovi – a relatively small, but one of the most remarkable mountain massifs in Montenegro. Our hiking trail begins in katun – a seasonal settlement of Štavna (1,800m) and takes us to the very summit of Vasojevićki Kom (2,461m). We go through stone fields, rocky passes and grassy slopes discovering the uniqueness of this mountain area. The great views that we enjoy reveal to us a big part of Montenegro and expand further to mountain peaks in Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. We complete our today’s adventure hiking downhill the same way and from Štavna we will be transferred to the village of Budevice, in Plav Municipality, where we stay overnight.

Day 6 – Prokletije Ridge Hike

The next destination where we enjoy hiking is the mountain massif of Prokletije whose name means “Accursed mountains” confirming the local lifestyle in the past but revealing the exceptional beauty of this natural attraction. Our today adventure starts in the Grebaja Valley (1,160m), one of the most impressive in Montenegro. After the ascent through a forest and grassy slopes, we continue to hike along the ridge connecting three peaks – Popadija (2,030m), Talijanka (2,057m) and Volušnica (1,879m). The trail ensures you enjoy one of the most impressive views of the mountains in Montenegro discovering the contrasts between the steep rocky peaks that the views spread on and the grassland surrounding us. After the loop along the ridge, we go downhill to the starting point of the hike the same way.

Day 7 – Ascent of Tromeđa (2,366m) in Prokletije National Park, where three countries meet

Tromeđa (2,366m) is the peak situated right on the border between three countries – Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo. Any imagination of views expanding from isn’t even close to first-hand experience! Our today’s adventure takes us there to enjoy the uniqueness shared between these neighbourhood countries. Our hike begins in the temporary settlement – katun of Bogićevica (1,525m). We enjoy the views of amazing surroundings hiking uphill through the grassy slopes of Bogićevica and Tromeđa to get to the very summit of the peak. Then the trail takes us to the gem of the national park hidden in the forest – Hridsko Lake (1,982m). Hiking towards the end of our adventure in Babino Polje (1,492m) we go through some katun. Jeep transfers to get to the starting point of the hike and back to the accommodation confirm you are treated to remote natural attractions.

Day 8 – Transfer to Podgorica

Transfer to Podgorica Airport (2.5hrs), through Albania, is provided for your homeward-bound flight.

About your travel in Montenegro

Accommodations

In Podgorica, you stay at Hotel Boscovich, in double occupancy rooms. This fully modern 4-star hotel meets all the needs of modern travelers. All rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a TV direct phone line, broadband internet and a bathroom.

The second night you stay in Kolašin, at Mirović Apartments. It is a family-owned business with 4-star ratings among households welcoming guests. In addition to the hospitality of the hosts and great homemade food, comfortable double, triple and quadruple rooms with bathrooms ensure a pleasant stay.

The third night you stay at Vranjak Eko Katun situated on the slopes of Bjelasica, part of the mountain belonging to Kolašin Municipality. The Bulatović family opens the door of katun, inherited from its ancestors, to tourists to experience the old tradition of spending summers in the mountains. There are 2, 5 and 7-bed wooden huts sharing toilets and bathtubs.

The fourth night we stay in the rural household of Kuća Kljajića in Lubnice Village, Berane Municipality. In the century-old house and the new one, there are basic rooms – double and quadruple ones with shared bathrooms. Spending time with the hosts, tasting great homemade food and products and listening to their stories you learn about the life of villagers through time.

The last three nights you spend in the rural household of the Feratović family – Grandfather’s Place, situated in the village of Budevice, Plav Municipality. There are wooden cottages with triple and quadruple rooms and bathrooms. The place ensures amazing views of Lake Plav and the surrounding peaks of the mountain massif of Prokletije.

Meals

We provide 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 7 dinners.
Lunch during the hikes on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 is a picnic style including bread, cheese, ham, vegetables, fruit, chocolate bars, cookies and trail mix.
Drinks are not included except during dinner in the local winery where wines are served for tasting as well as juices and other drinks produced by the hosts.

Vegetarian and special diets will be catered to, but options are limited in the mountain areas of Montenegro. Please inform us of any specific requirements upon booking.

Transportation

We use comfortable vehicles – a passenger car, van or minibus, depending on the size of the group. Jeeps are engaged for some transfers because of the road conditions.

Easy

Trips rated EASY typically have 1-3 hours of activity per day, with hikes/walks less than five kilometers on mostly flat terrain at altitudes of up to 900 meters.

Easy to Moderate

Trips rated as EASY to MODERATE are designed for travelers seeking both EASY and MODERATE trip activity levels. Trips rated EASY to MODERATE typically have easier rated walks/hikes with options for more moderate activity levels on some days.

Moderate

Trips rated MODERATE typically have 3-6 hours of activity per day, with hikes up to 15 kilometers on rolling or mountainous terrain with some steep ascents/descents and uneven trails at altitudes of up to 1,900 meters.

Moderate to Challenging

Trips rated as MODERATE to CHALLENGING are designed for travelers seeking both MODERATE and CHALLENGING trip activity levels. Trips rated MODERATE to CHALLENGING typically have moderate rated walks/hikes with options for more strenuous activity levels on some days.

Challenging

Trips rated CHALLENGING typically have 5-8 hours of activity per day, with hikes up to 15-20 kilometers on mountainous, exposed terrain with steep ascents/descents and uneven trails at altitudes of up to 2,700 meters.

Ultimate Challenge

Designed for very fit and experienced hikers. Trips rated ULTIMATE CHALLENGE typically have 10 or more hours of activity per day, hiking 20 or more kilometers on remote, mountainous, exposed terrain with steep ascents/descents, and uneven trails at altitudes of up to 2,700 meters.
