Slovenia

Called “Little Switzerland,” Slovenia, known for great skiing and a well-established mountain culture, is the northern boundary of the Via Dinarica and the place where the Dinaric Alps meet the Western Alps.

A perfect spot to hop off the normal European tourism cycle, a Balkan adventure here includes magnificent hiking, glacial lakes, castles, a string of excellent mountain huts, and a seemingless endless series of deep karst caves like those located in the town Postojna, which is the beginning of the Via Dinarica mega trail.

One suggested itinerary would have travelers fly into the capital of Ljubljana – filled with cafe life and Central European culture – before making their way into the Balkan Peninsula, where life is a little richer, the food is more natural, and the experiences are unforgettable.
